Saving Hacks

My wife and I have struck a windfall.

We wanted to donate 100k to charity. Rather than a lump sum, we wanted to make an annual donation of 10k (for the tax relief) Where is a good place to park and earn some interest in the meantime?

We went to a few banks, they are suggesting putting a portion for 6 to 12 months FD the rest for a longer tenure. Thank you.

Congrats! Can consider SSB and FD in the mean time

Besides what had been suggested. You can consider those single premium endowment policies that the insurance companies launch from time to time. They are typically 2- to 3-year product and interest rate is better than FD.

For donations, go to giving.sg and choose charities with IPC status. When you are on the donation page of a campaign, there will be an icon indicating TDR to be issued (this means the charity has IPC status). You can input the amount you would like to donate. For tax deductible donation, you need to provide your name (as in NRIC) and NRIC number. The tax relief will be auto reflected in your income tax assessment next year. You do not have to take any further action.

Instead of putting all 10k into 1 charity, I recommend supporting a few so that different groups of people can receive support. It's very easy to select an organisation, indicate the amount and add to cart. You can see the total amount in your cart and make adjustments. You will have a record of the donations in your account which you can download as Excel file and save it for reference.
