Miles or cashback credit card for a young working adult?

For young adult working for 2 years. Spends mostly on grab (6x a week), eating out and fashion (not luxury items).

Low spending on shopee and grocery occasionally.

I think it really depends on what you're into. For me, I usually only go on 1 vacation a year if any and it's usually near sg. so miles aren't as worth it for me unless I go out of Asia every year. But if you're someone that likes to travel, it can be very worth it.

Cashback usually has more restrictions than miles. Such as minimum monthly spend, caps on monthly cashback etc. So you may need to do some maths every month to make sure you hit the min spend compared to miles that will just keep being earned as you spend.

I remember an article that compared miles and cashback and if your compared it to how much a plane ticket costs, miles are more worth it since there are a few cards that get you 5x miles and such.

So it's really on your preference and lifestyle as to which is more worth it.

Hi Anon,

Not sure if you're considering only those you tagged, but an excellent card to consider would be the HSBC Revolution. It rewards 4mpd for contactless and online spending at a wide variety of merchants, which should include the spending categories that you stated. The best part is that it has a $0 annual fee!

If you're not into collecting miles, it's okay because the points earned on the card can just as easily be redeemed for shopping/dining vouchers, which makes it similar to a cashback card to some degree. However, do note that the bonus points it awards is capped at $1k/month. HSBC had an amazing sign up bonus for this card that just recently ended, so if you're interested, you can keep a lookout for when a new sign up bonus comes around.

Among the cards you tagged, I believe DBS Live Fresh is the most worth it one, earning 5% cashback on online and contactless payments, which should also cover the bulk of your expenses.

Hope this helps!
