Why should I get private disability insurance (on top of Careshield) if I have basic Careshield and TPD coverage?

Both Careshield and TPD cover for disability. Understandably the conditions for claim eligibility are different. What are the reasons for getting additional disability insurance?

For CareShield Life, it is different from a TPD coverage in 2 aspects. Firstly, the payout begins if you are unable to perform 3 out of 6 Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) rather than the need to meet the requirments for total permanent disability. Secondly, It provides basic financial support in the form of monthly payouts rather than a lump sum, which is in line to the monthly costs of Long Term Care in Singapore.

Great Eastern do provide supplement plans to the Basic CareShield Life which would enhance your payout to up to S$5,000 per month.

  • For GREAT CareShield Policyholders, get at least 50% of the monthly benefit payable upon inability to perform 2 ADL, and 100% of monthly benefit payable upon inability to perform 3 ADLs.

  • One-time lump-sum payout of up to $5,000 on occurrences of any signs of mild disability.

  • Premiums are eligible for waiver if the policyholder becomes unable to perform at least 1 ADL.
