The richest man in the world changes every now and than. So it is kinda hard to track and different people will be giving different answers while looking at different sources. In fact, when these richest man's companies share prices fluctuate, it may even temporary kick them out of being the richest man or make him the richest man.

Wiki maintain a list of the richest man for the year and their source of wealth. This is a good reference.

Personally, I like Warren Buffett. He become one of the richest just by buying and selling shares.
