Large purchase or RSP

I’ve been using POEMS and have have a couple of RSP (on suggestions from sites) and I recently got moomoo where it seems I can “buy” stocks. Is it better for a student to use RSPs, or to just do a 1 shot “purchase” of stocks to hold ? How does the dividend differ from both

Not too sure what your question is but imma try my best.

RSP (Dollar cost averaging or DCA for short) and 1 shot purchase (lump sum) are just entry strategies. There is not really a right or wrong answer in choosing one or the other, assuming you're buying into the same stock.

Maybe take a look at a comparison and you can decide which is best for you!

  • Lump sum incurs less commissions (since less transactions)
  • Lump sum tends to do better overall (when investing in market index ETFs) aas opposed to DCA
  • Lump sum is pretty intimidating for many new investors, which is where DCA comes in to help investors ease themselves into the market
  • DCA kinda helps to remove the fear from the investor, especially if it's automated.

As for dividends, assuming you DCA in over a period of time, a lump sum will definitely give you more dividends assuming the dividend is paid out before your DCA finishes your original capital set aside for the DCA process.
