Is Integrated Shield Plan Rider necessary given that deductible and co-insurance can be paid via Medisave

According to the Ministry of Health and the CPF Board, we can use our Medisave savings to make payment for ISP Deductible and 10% Co-insurance. Since we can use Medisave to pay for these expenses, is it still recommended for me to purchase a rider? Thanks in advance!

It really depends on each individual, but the reason for the rider is to cap the amount of money that you need to pay from your Medisave.

For example, without a rider, if your bill is $100,000:

Deductible: $1,500 - $3,500 (Pay yourself)

Co-insurance: 10% = $9650 to $9850 (Pay yourself)

Out of pocket: Around $11,350 to $13,150

Yep you can pay from your Medisave but do remember that this is still your money, and if your Medisave doesn't have enought to pay for it, you still have to pay through cash.

If you have a rider, the bills are capped at $3000 for the 5% copayment (assuming the new rider after April 2019):

Out of pocket costs: $3000 even though 5% of the bill is supposed to be around $5000.

So whether is it necessary or not, it also depends on your own finances and needs!

Another way to think of this is "If you can pay for medical expenses with medisave, do I need to buy IP." Rider is to prevent the event that your deductible touch wood is much higher that your medisave account.
