Hey there!
There are various term policies out there. You should always be covered; how much will depend on which stage of life are you in and your dependents. In general, there are multiple underwriting risks taken by different insurers so you might want to submit a preliminary underwriting first with different insurers. Do note that your term policy application might come with a loading (additional premiums), come with exclusion or be rejected completely .
Financial planning is an integral part of life. You can reach me here to find out more.

You can calculate your rough insurance requirements here.
If you have pre-existing conditions, it would depend on the underwriting results and the terms that the insurer would give you.
How long your policy should last would depend on the budget, which will be affected by your income and underwriting results. Short term plans would come into play as they would be cheaper and will be used to cover specific time horizon such as your dependents. However, the difference in cost of term versus life plan has been pretty much been diminished if the time horizons are similar. The industry as a whole as evolved beyond that.
