Hey there Anon,

If you define valuable to be in terms of salary, I would say not very much because a soft skills focused degree tend to be more easily picked up compared to one which requires hard skill.

E.g. An engineer can simply pick up marketing, but it would be difficult for a marketer to pick up engineering.

A suggestion would be to consider working backwards, if you do decide to pursue communications, which aspect would you want to focus on in the future?

Bei has given many great examples of communications-related jobs and the fields, so you can consider those as well.

If you want to know if the degree helps in your future job, one way would be to search for those jobs on LinkedIn and see what requirements they are looking for as well!

E.g. Check out a couple of job requirements of a Digital Marketer on LinkedIn and see it's something you think you can do with a degree in Communications. And if the job scope is something you would potentially want to do.

Of course, you're never restricted by your degree and with so many online courses and resources available, if you do want to pick up say, coding skills, it is posisble as well.

Hope this helps for perspective! Cheers and all the best! :)

Not very sure how to define 'valuable', but for myself, a communications degree allows me to understand the 'whys' behind many things, gives me the freedom and ability to branch out into different practical fields such as digital marketing, copywriting, designing, etc. What you want to do ultimately is not only limited to communications-related jobs but you can also become an educator, consultant, social worker, event manager, PR specialist, journalist/reporter, marketing/social media manager, media planner, etc, just to name a few.
