Is it time to sell/take profits on a US stock portfolio and stay in cash for a while (say rest of Q4)?

Wondering what is everyone's views given record highs in US market and potential for sharp drop due to regional instability (US/China trade tensions/HK situation)

Hi Kelly,

If we're looking at specific stocks, then taking profit (i.e. not complete liquidation) can be an option, because everything is just on paper till it's realised.

For example, if you had a stock that run up 100%-200% (as is common in the US market), selling off 1/2 or 1/3 would result in you recovering your capital. No matter what happens now, you won't make a loss.

If it's on mutual funds or ETFs, some measure of profit taking can be done as well, but usually if you did ETFs or mutual funds, you'll let them run over years.

Don't go chasing after the peaks and the valleys. I've never seen anyone catch them.

Your strategy and plan should not be affected. If your tp is not reached yet, why pull out?

Taking profit yes but you have to check on your portfolio weightage.

Maybe switch the investments ...
