Inspired to learn more about Singapore's history after DPM Heng announced SingapoRediscovers yesterday. What are your top recommendations for places to visit and what are their admission fees?

Suggestions for museums or certain specific spots in Singapore will be very helpful.

My fave has to be National Gallery - seeing Singapore's history through the lenses of artists across the decades. The UOB & DBS collection in particular is quite illuminating. I recommend downloading the NG app to listen to the guide for some historical background too. Redeem their 1 year free membership and visit them for free :D

Although the National Museum of Singapore retells history more chronologically, I find it slightly biased towards the common narrative that we being told through the years (in sch, during ndp etc). Through art pieces in the National Gallery, there are more nuances to it and a better backdrop of Singapore's position in SEA/Nanyang over the years.

Seeing what life was like (even satirical ones) is more interesting to me than seeing shards of clay ahh but if you are looking to find out more about recent history (post-independence), I do think you should drop by the National Museum too.

Free historical places

  1. Japanese cemetery park (beautiful and peaceful, with nuggets of historical explanations across the park)

  2. Fort canning

  3. Haw par villa

  4. Kampong Lorong Buangkok (last kampong in SG! it is small and there's nothing to "read" or "learn" about but it is nostalgic.)

  5. Maritime gallery (learn about our port's humble beginnings and how it has grown + play with their simulator at the end hahah its cool!)

Hi anon, there's coverage of SingapoRediscovers on SeedlyReads.

Some of the deals have expired, but you can check those still running.

If you want to have some adrenaline rush, you can try the Megazip with a group of four. (Deal running till 31 Dec 2020: 4 Megazip tickets for the price of 3 ($55 each) to go in a group, plus a free $10 F&B voucher to use at AJ Hackett or Trapizza by Shangri-La)

I'm looking forward to the government's announcement of the SingapoRediscovers voucher details.

Wonder if hotel credits is something possible? Short getaway during this period!...
