Many people assume that others have lives similar to theirs. In reality, families in conservative societies can also have tense and complicated relationships with varying socio-economic background. In which case, broad concepts such as filial piety might not apply in the same way. You will have to discern for yourself whether the advice applies to your situation.

Salaryman at some company

It's not filial piety if you label it as a cost...

I'm thankful that my parents are not complacent and continue to work while they are still healthy. I'm thankful for all they have given me and I help out with the household expenses while placing my allowances to them in CPF and/or savings accounts.

Reviewing my parents' finances is fun because they're a different set of problems to solve and I like to solve problems.

I'm also thankful that my parents allow me to choose my relationship. They are cooperative (and so are my in-laws).

Once in a while, it's a bit hard to convince them to do or not do something e.g. not to purchase dumplings and mooncakes during festive seasons since we don't eat them. That upsets me a little but I guess it upsets them more lol.
