My company's management recently had a talk with us. If we don't hit our KPIs, they will relook into manpower and basically let us go and get new hires. Should I start looking for a new job?

It hasn't been a year since I joined the company and so changing to another job now might reflect badly on my resume. Plus, it doesn't help that the job market is bad right now and moving to a new job is risky. Our KPIs are also impossible to achieve sometimes because the standards are set too high, which is demoralising at times. I'm feeling drained... Is this a sign that I should start looking for a job? I also feel disappointed that we don't seem to be valued beyond numbers...

It doesn't sound like you're happy at your workplace. You should start searching for another role. Also, if they do decide to terminate you, make sure you know your employment rights.

You can read these guides on:

I would suggest to start exploring other job options. Update your CV and LinkedIn profile, and browse if there are good openings when you are free. If you come across a good opportunity, there's no harm applying for it (even if you are not in this current predicament)

Given the impossible KPIs and threat of retrenchment, there's no need to stay loyal. Constant job hopping may be frowned upon, but looking for a job within a year only once probably do not bother most potential employers.

All the best.

I'd say do what Charmaine suggested.

Plus, submit any possible form of voice recording and KPI target form about the "not achieving KPI then be fire" evidence to MOM or inform MOM such practice. Let's see what MOM will do as fair practice just in case.

I propose you start looking for a new job while you continue to work hard at your current company. To be honest I've only be at one company where they actually set reasonable KPI (and the end results? Everyone is happy and exceeded their performances) and the rest are just trying to get the best out of what they could. Management will always try to aim high, not low because they have to answer to stakeholders too.

However, because the company actually laid it out clearly that they're letting people go if KPI is not hit and this KPI is unlikely to achieve, do your preparations. Update your resume, go for interview and still aim to do the best that you can at your current employer. I cannot emphasize that enough because I've met people who just do the minimal when they are still employed (but looking out) and one even got so bad she was asked to go because she started to skip work literally. Don't let yourself be unprepared especially in these times and all the best
