Investing in Which Market?

Hi, was wondering which stock market my fellow Singaporeans are investing in?

Mainly in the Singapore stock market? or U.S. market?

What are the differences and why you choose that market to invest in? is one better than another?

US markets has the better history of higher return in the long run. But for investing, you also need to consider your needs and there might be diversification needed.

I invest in both.

  • SG market is stable, until it doesn't move much, so doesn't profit much since not much upside. But the blue chips give good dividend. in gist, SG market is like a marathon race, hold till the end of the long journey while reinvest the dividend.
  • US market is volatile, but can be stable depend on the type of instrument invested - etf is stable, individual stocks especially the popular ones are more unstable.

I have a mix of both markets with portfolio sizing for diversification.

There are a few reasons why US stock exchange is more popular,

  1. Diversification - US stocks offers a broader range of investment opportunities, including exposure to global markets and sectors
  2. Market size: The U.S. stock exchange is significantly larger than the SGX, offering more liquidity and trading volume.
  3. Global recognition: U.S. stocks are widely recognized and followed globally, making them more attractive
  4. Investment options: The U.S. stock exchange offers a wider range of investment products, including options, futures and other derivatives.

But that said, if locals don't support Singapore market, then we are also doom to fail. Note that SGX is still one of the most reputable exchange in Asia.

Current accumulation after multiple strategies/failures:

SG - dividends, no forex risk

US - growth and tech, dividends (monthly and USD accumulation), ESPP

HK - dividends, China tech

UK - index funds, dividends

AUS - dividends

  • Both.

  • SG because of dividend, high and no tax.
  • US because of growth.
