Ideally, what kind of returns can I expect on a balanced portfolio of bonds and equities?

A 50/50 Equity Bond Split has historically done about 5-6% p.a for the last 30 to 40 years or so. Do expect this to deflate slightly though with both bond yields and equity valuations aren't looking too attractive.

Just make sure you're diversified and you stay invested. That's more important.
