Should a typical person have less or one portfolio, and lump all of the money together?

You should have different portfolio allocations for different goals.
A 5 year goal should be allocated differently to a 30 year goal even if you're an aggressive or conservative investor.
A 5 year goal can't take the same risk and thus should be less exposed to equity while a 30 year goal is far enough for you to hold a 100% Equity portfolio.
