No hard and fast rule but changing every now and then is helpful based on the book "Algebra of Wealth"

After your promotion, stay for one year to deliver and then move. That way you leverage on compounding your promotion increments, and it looks good that you were promoted in the role.

More importantly is to continue building on your talent so you remain employable. Serial job hoppers may find it hard getting a role too...

Depends on:

  1. Your seniority. Junior to mid level is still workable for jobhopping but once you reach senior manager level, you must be deliberate on which company to work with longer term.
  2. Your professional jobline expectations. Some industries are more tolerant of shorter stints than others.
  3. Your likely openings outside. If the company is in a good bargaining position, a job hop may not always yield the intended effect.

Average is around 2 years.

But it seems a generation thing.

Gen Z is like 8 months.

Gen Y is like 2-3 years.

Gen X is like 4-5 years.

Boomer is like 10 years.
