What is the difference if I were to use a robo-advisor to invest in the S&P500 compared to if i buy the ETF on my own?

You don't get to choose, the robo will decide which products to buy. However, I'm quite certain for their exposure to large cap US equities, they would purchase an ETF that mimics the S&P 500.

The whole point of robo advisors is to provide you with a portfolio based on your risk profile and to manage it passively (without human intervention). You won’t get to specify which ETFs are part of your portfolio..
