Cashing out dividends or not

I currently have Syfe REITS+ & Moneyowl WiseIncome as dividend-generating portfolios. Both of which I have opted for the dividends to be reinvested. But I am currently seeing the balance being lower than my input (one-time) despite receiving dividends (amount received is shown at the portfolio page).

Should I be cashing out the dividends?

For moneyowl, it is slightly different. I have to cancel the portfolio and recreate one if I intent to change the dividend payout mode.

Anyone has either of these 2 and can provide some insights? Thanks!

Hi LLy,

Whether you should be cashing out the dividends will depend on your current financial situation. How will you be using these dividends? If you are still working and earning an active income, most likely dividends are a means to supplement your income. If you are a retiree, they will form part of your retirement income to fund living expenses etc.

Often times dividend payouts are not substantial when the portfolio is relatively small (i.e. a 4.5% dividend on $100k portfolio is only $4.5k/year or ~$375/month) Therefore, an accumulator should always choose to reinvest dividends to build up their portfolio for a more substantial dividend payout during their retirement phase.

On the technicalities of your portfolio value after receiving dividends, Please see under our FAQ

  • As dividends are declared and paid out from the Net Asset Value of the fund, the price of the fund is expected to drop correspondingly by the amount of dividends declared immediately after the Record Date (i.e. dividend declaration date). This is normal behaviour and it does not mean that you have sustained a loss on your investments.

For example, if the fund price is $10 per unit and it declares a dividend rate of $1 per unit, then the fund price will drop to $9, all else equals.

If you have chosen to reinvest your dividends, these dividends will be used to buy additional units into WiseIncome within 14 business days from the Record Date. In doing so, your portfolio value will increase by these additional units purchased.

If you have chosen to receive your dividends in cash, the amount will be credited into your cash account on the first business day of Aug, Nov, Feb and May respectively. The sum of these dividends received over time will be factored when calculating the total returns of your portfolio.

Hope this helps!

I have Syfe REIT+ and I reinvest the dividends. Like you, I'm in negative territory right now. I'll rethink my portfolio with Syfe when I break even. I'm still bullish about S-REIT specially when recovery from the pandemic goes on full swing.

Syfe REIT+; If you do not need to use the dividend, just let it reinvest at a low price. let compund...
