My mom had a history of cancer in her mid-forties. Because of this, I am looking for cancer insurance but am concern that the insurance company would exclude coverage of the specific cancer my mom had previously.

Hey there!
Your best bet is to submit a preliminary underwriting to see what is the verdict of the underwriters. Typically, it may come with a loading since the usual cancer cut off age is ~60 years old.
Alternatively, you can try AIA MultiStage Cancer Cover. It gives a lump sum payout upon diagnosis of cancer across all stages. The underwriting questions are simpler compared to the usual health declaration and gives allowance for people whose family may have had history/pre-existing.

Family history of cancer does not necessarily preclude you from coverage. Every company has its own risk appetite when it comes to dealing with critical illness conditions. There are plans which do not even include family history in the underwriting process. Most importantly, speak to an advisor who is experienced with managing the underwriting and claims process.
Hope you get a satisfactory underwriting.
