When should I use my Debit Card 1% cash back VS Grab Pay?

Still using the SC Jumpstart debit card, wondering which is a better option? Confirmed 1% cashback VS Grab Pay?

Hi Anon,

Musyaffaq broke down the thought process behind this decision quite well.

However, you may want to note that you don't have to choose between the SC Cashback debit card and GrabPay.

SC Cashback debit card awards 1% cashback even on GrabPay top-ups.

This means you can simply use the SC Cashback debit card to top up your GrabPay wallet, then pay for your expenses using GrabPay. This way, you will earn 1% cashback when you make the top up, and earn GrabRewards points when you spend with GrabPay.

You can earn up to 1.8% cashback using this method! (1% from SC debit card + 0.8% from GrabRewards points)

Hope this helps!

@thefrugalstudent not sure if I can check if it the top up directly leads to the cash back, but usually I don’t use my debit cards cos I use my credit card instead. And before this I used to use the HomeTeamNS debit card to top up. One time I used the DBS Visa card instead and the next month I got a few dollars of cash back. So from there I realise maybe got cashback. So not 100% sure 😅

Ah, I see. If you were using the DBA Visa card for other expenses as well and received cashback, it's likely that the cashback came from the other expenses, but I guess we won't know for sure haha.

Grab’a highest is $10 vouchers for 5000points. So if you’re Platinum, and you spend $1250 and get 5000 points, you will get “cash back” of 0.8%. So if you compare this with the cash back of the debit card, the debit card one better.

But wait, sometimes debit card got cap per month on the cash back. Grab on the other hand don’t have. So if you really want to maximise the returns, use the debit card until hit cap, then use grabpay card.

But wait again, sometimes grab got those promo where if you’re first few people to spend like $1000 you can get an extra 5000 points or something (it’s called GrabBonanza). So if like this, is better if you use grabpay card.

So which one should you use? It depends!! For me this is how I do it:

1) check if grab got the promo. If have, use grabpay card.

2) if no promo, use the debit card until the cap if have.

3) use the grabpay card.

Hope this is simple enough!! ☺️

No problem! It’s easier when you put it in writing so you don’t need to think much when you have to buy something ☺️

Thank You!
