Hi anon,
Miles validity would be talking about how long your miles would last in your FFP account.
In the example of KF, that's 3 years.
Once you redeem an award ticket, that award ticket itself has a validity of one year. So if you redeem on 1st Jan 2020, you can change the date of departure up to 31st Dec 2020.
Let's say your miles you used were due to expire on 31st Mar 2020. Now they are in the 'form' of an award ticket. Cancelling your award ticket before 31st Mar will cause the miles to be redeposited to your account (fees aside). After that date, if you cancel, your miles will not be redeposited because they would have expired already if they wree to be credited back to your FFP.
