I hear more and more people investing in ETFs via the banks. Is it better than if I were to do it by myself. Could someone share in terms of fees etc.

There is no advantage. Through bank and by yourself, both will incur transaction costs. However, through bank may incur higher costs.
The good thing about doing it yourself is that you have more control over your investments. When to invest, what to invest, how much to invest.
