What are the steps you took to plan for child's education, right from when he's born till he's 21? Are there any essential steps that are applicable to all? or do i adjust based on the child's capabilities?

Yes, every parent would definitely need to adjust based on the child's capabilities and temperament.
Every human being is innately different, and learns in a different way, and at a difference pace.
Similarly, each child is intelligent in their own unique ways. To force a cooker cutter approach to decide if a kid is smart early on in his or her development is probably not going to help with development.
While I noted that most of the responses are around budget for tuition etc - but the big question to me is, does good academic results mean the kid would grow up to be a good and productive individual? Having been in what is deemed as an 'elite school' myself, I actually found that being bombarded with pressure and extra tuition was simply not for me.
What I deem are essential steps for a child are the following:
Teaching street smarts from a young age
Teaching the kid to be financially savvy, with the goal to be financially independent
Kindness
Desire to contribute to the world, and not just indulge in consumerism
