On one hand, small talk seems important to establish rapport. On the other, I don't want to seem that I'm 'interviewing' the recruiter or taking up more time than I should.

It is inevitable to do some small talks in interview and it is a great way to form a genuine connection with your interviewer. Try to make the small talks purposeful and relatable. And it will show them that you are friendly, intelligent, and a good fit for the position.

A good way to start the conversation is to thank the interviewer for taking the time to interview you, and share that you are really excited to have the chance to speak.
