On one hand, small talk seems important to establish rapport. On the other, I don't want to seem that I'm 'interviewing' the recruiter or taking up more time than I should.

When you prepare for an interview, don't just prepare answers. Prepare questions.

Questions that you can use to "small talk" with your interviewer at the start of the interview. A good way to start the conversation is to thank the interviewer for taking the time to interview you, and share that you are really excited to have the chance to speak. A lot of what happens during an interview depends on your judgment. If you feel that the vibe is right, go ahead and ask how their day/week has been.

At the end of the interview, don't just "small talk". You definitely can if the situation calls for it. But more often than not, use your time at the end of the interview to ask questions.

A big part is feeling the room. If you sense that your interviewer is pressed for time and is rushing off to another meeting, focus on the most important questions.
