I'm just shocked by how crazily expensive it is for a smartphone by Apple these days.
As an Apple fan, my answer is going to be quite biased but I think it is worth the upgrade if you have the older iphone models and are looking for an upgrade. I've always been a fan of Apple's interface and user experience. I no longer see myself having another phones (i.e Samsung, Google, Huawei etc)
I have the iPhone 11 Pro for a year and do not see myself getting the new iPhone any time soon. It still works fine for me! But I understand others may find some faults in their phone already and are looking forward to the kind of premium experience that Apple phones offer (or just experiencing the apple brand itself)
I'd agree that it's really quite ridiculous to see how expensive each iPhone gets every year and it would be more economical to get a laptop, but you may consider the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini or iPhone SE for a more "affordable" price range and still get to experience the Apple software/interface.
I'm shocked too! I realized purchasing an iPhone is almost equivalent to buying some laptops. HAHA. I'm still considering whether to upgrade my phone because the phone I am currently using is quite slow: some applications take a whole minute to open up. But, I am just wondering whether the functions in the iPhone 12 add that much value for me to be paying that much.

Compare with iPhone 11 a lot of diff meh. What iphone are you using now? If you are happy with how fast it is now then why consider 5G. Theres always going to be the Apple fan who just wants the latest Apple product regardless of how much inprovement if any at all
