Save on the hotel costs to have more money for a holiday, or spend on a good hotel but have lesser to spend?

What are your thoughts on saving money on the hotel so that there are more funds available for a holiday, vs staying in a decent hotel, but having a smaller holiday budget for spending as a result?

I maximize my experiences, so I would prefer to save on the hotel costs as long as it is reasonably clean and comfortable
