My (possibly erroneous) secret theory is that

90-95% VOO

and

5-10% physical gold

could on ultra-longterm be the

best portfolio ever for retail investors.

Hi, Anon, what I do myself with ETFs is higher risk, what I - if at all - could recommend is prudent & cautious ETF investing. So my VOO + gold idea is not so far away from what I see myself as prudent. SP500 already is rather tech heavy. VUSD could even be better for you because the dividends of SP500 ETFs are substantial (ca. 1.8%) and with an Ireland domiciled ETF you'd only pay 15 instead of 30% tax on dividends, which gives you better total performance with VUSD than with VOO. What can I say on Technology ETFs? First, that I won't recommend them. Second, that I own them. They need to be large and, if possible, cheap. My favorites are: VGT, QQQ, FDN, SOXX, SKYY, XBI, FBT, ARKG (not passive), IHI, CQQQ, PGJ. But maybe better stay only with SP500 and MSCI World or MSCI ACWI ... they are already sufficient for ultra-longterm investing.

These lists on FSMOne are quite good and interesting, they also mention CQQQ f.ex. https://secure.fundsupermart.com/fsm/etf/etf-focus-list

If I have more monies, I would buy to hedge but I will not make Gold my biggest holding because at the end of the days, stocks will outperform in the long run.
