I have recently just graduated from Uni with a Bachelor in Accountancy. Honestly, I am lost in finding a job now, I can't decide on any job that interests me.

I have tried working as an audit intern but it didn't interest me especially the lifestyle. With my average results, I'm feeling demoralized to work in the business sector as my understanding is limited. I have further my option to the Army but afraid of losing interest during the bond period, which can be torturous.

You didn't say what you like so i presume you dunno which is common. Just clock the experience and take the job with the highest pay then decide later. With the money you have more options to pursue interests. I have been working in an industry i am hardly interested in ... I spend the balance time elsewhere.

Hi Jervis, thanks for sharing your struggles! You are definitely not alone and you're neither the first nor the last person to feel lost about their career.

As an Engineering major, the only thing I knew upon leaving school was that I never wanted to do anything engineering-related after my lousy results. Instead I stumbled into one job after another in multiple roles and industries feeling lost and somewhat demoralised.

What ultimately helped to shape my career was ultimately thinking about what I spent a lot of time on even though I wasn't being paid. In my case it was writing - I'd been blogging furiously since 2002... just for the fun of it! I turned writing into a career and it's sustained me for the past 6 years.

Take some time to think of what hobby or skill this would be for you.

  1. This accountant makes gelato: https://www.afr.com/companies/professional-serv...

  2. This banker makes burgers: https://vulcanpost.com/665877/omakase-burger-si...

The possibilities are endless!

Of course, there's always the danger that when you turn it into a career - you stop doing it for fun - but if you're lucky, then you're just being paid to do something you like.

Hi Jervis! Congratulations on your graduation! I understand where you are coming from, I'd suggest upskilling yourself through online courses in the meantime such as the use of data analytics. With the increasing use of technology nowadays, it will definitely impact the accounting and audit industry in my opinion. Learning skills related to data analytics, artificial intelligence, and even blockchain will put you at an advantage. Hopefully, after exploring this area, you will develop an interest and apply for a role that covers these aspects.

Alternatively, apply for any traineeships available, even though it may be outside of your degree. This gives you the opportunity to learn and try out something new. Who knows, you might enjoy it more! All the best!

This is an opportune time to look into upskilling or venturing into another area that can complement your accountancy background (or just go with something completely new!). Feeling lost is normal, so rather than wallow in it, take this chance to explore other areas. You may find your calling in the most unexpected manner.

Hey there! auditing can eventually move into financial analysis.

If your results are decent, big 4...
