Hi, most integrated shield plans do cover procedures like colonoscopy (as long as it is medically necessary) and if you are warded (i.e. inpatient) for more than X hours (as stipulated in the policy), your medical bills are also eligible for the shield claim.

However, if this is due to a pre-existing condition (at the point of purchase of your shield plan), it is likely that it will not be covered. (Most plans are the same). If it is not (i.e. your shield plan has been in force for a long time since you were healthy and fit and you only recently required a colonoscopy), the procedure and hospital stay (if any) is likely covered.

You may want to refer to the fine print in your policy to check this. :) Hope this helps!

My intention is to do a colonoscopy earlier at aged 38 (this year). What do you mean by medically necessary? Isnā€™t it better to do prevention early and not wait till the recommended age of 50?

If it is purely as a voluntary check-up, this would not be claimable - similar to how preventive Full Medical Examinations are non-claimable. As Li Xing rightly pointed out below, the procedure has to be recommended by your doctor. If you suspect a condition or display certain symptoms, you may ask your doctor if he/she recommends the procedure. If he/she recommends it and states that it is medically necessary, then the procedure will be claimable. Hope this helps!

Could be also done on an ambulatory basis

Hi Anon,

In regards to using your shield plan for medical stay, it has to be recommended by your doctor and it needs to be due to medical purpose and not for recovery or your comfort. As there are instances where people choose to be warded for the comfort of recovery though it's not needed or recommended by the doctor.

So do consult before you decide to go ahead with the stay, else you might end up paying for your staycation in the ward in full
