How much should I be insured for and what terms should I look out for?

My Profile:
-21, non-smoker
-1 more year till ORD (starting to look for plans early due to possibility of lower premiums)
-Still deciding whether to continue education (will have to take a study loan) or job-hunt (will assume ~$2k+ income in the short term)
-No dependents for now
-Have an emergency fund and already covered for hospitalization insurance for medical coverage
-Looking for Death + CI + Disability
-Prefer personal policy and extensive coverage

At your age, a Term Plan to Age 65 will be very cheap (premiums less than $700 yearly) for a $1million coverage policy. You benefit from

1) Large Sum assured insurance discount (of 10-15%)

2) Low age of entry for Term Insurance. (cheaper again)

3) For CI, it will be more prudent to get about $100,000 tagged to a whole life plan. But due to budget constraints, you may just wish to tag to the term policy.

4) Future HPS (if you bought BTO) can be pledged with this term insurance

5) TPD coverage is significant enough.

6) Reducing sum assured later is easier and cheaper.

Get the SAF Mindef term insurance first until you’re 1 year into your work life. CI hosp costs are being covered already In the hosp, maybe disability portion get a rider on your IP shield plan if that’s the hosp plan you are on.
