I know I shouldn't stop playing my part even if the majority don't, but sometimes I wonder how effective one person can create a change even if the rest don't and if it will even help at all.
You are not alone. Plus, it's not just about contributing to less waste, it's also about being a less irresponsible person. You are someone who thinks about his/her actions on the environment. We need more people like you to pass on the message and motivate others, starting from your loved ones and maybe even friends.
As for myself, I have been putting my shopping bags to use. As for the bags to carry food, I use the same plastic bag I got last time from the stall.
I also reuse plastic food containers. (Disclaimer: I only did this once because I rarely get takeaways.) I reduce the water needed to wash them by closing it and shaking it hard after leaving some soap and water inside the container.
I try my best to not to make merchants use up plastic bags for me but sometimes, I still forget. Sometimes, the purchase was unexpected. But if it's small stuff I end up just carrying them home in my arms or fit them in my bag if possible.
Unlike you, I still need some time to cultivate the habit, seeing that I still forget.
At least, if I fail to reduce, I reuse/recycle. I have a place to store clean plastic bags and I have a recycling bin at my house.
Last but not least, I also donate $$ to charities which focus on environmental and wildlife conservation. As for volunteering, not sure yet. At least, I took some action (by donating) and can proceed from there.
