Citi Cash Back+ is probably best for high spenders, not so much the average consumer. While you'll earn a direct 1.6% unlimited cashback with no minimum spend, you can earn at much higher rates with other capped alternatives on the market. In fact, someone would need to spend S$6k–8k+/month to earn more with an unlimited cashback card than they could with one of Singapore's more competitive capped cards (we've done the math). So if you have a budget closer to S$2k/month, you might want to consider an option like UOB One Card, which offers up to 5% flat rebate, with the potential to earn S$1,200/year (S$2,400 if you factor in bonus boosts for Grab & SP bill pay).

Promotions are definitely important, but it's also important to think about nett earnings, especially by the end of your second year of ownership, when annual fees usually kick in and sign-on promotions are long gone.

Still, I do want to mention that Citi Cash Back+ Card is one of the best unlimited cards on the market–it has a higher flat rate than the 1.5% market standard–so if you are a high spender, go for it!

I wouldnt push cards for the sake of doing them, but maybe the following questions would help guide your answer:

  • How much do you spend a month, and what categories do they fall into? (this would help you ascertain if you should have a basic frills free credit card with no min spend or if you should consider cards with tiered cashback rates with min spend/month)

  • How many credit cards do you already own?

  • How do you like to be rewarded (cash back or airmiles or mix of both - rewards points)

That said, also look for good offers that are offered by banks and aggregators before signing up for a card (similar to hotel bookings). (e.g. choose between $250 paynow from singsaver or 4.5% cashback from citi directly)
