What would justify redeeming economy/premium economy seats with miles? i know most miles junkies would be disgusted with this "wastage" of miles but are there scenarios where it's justified?
Hi, yes you are right. Usually people wont do it because the miles usage is usually very high. If there is an expiry date for your miles and usually you do not hit enough miles for business class, you can choose to redeem economy seats. Rather than just waste the miles away.
I honestly think it depends on individual. If you feel like redeeming some miles for your family, even if on economy, it will always be worth even more value. Personally, I would only redeem for business class, because it'll feel more "shiok". Generally speaking, I would be able to part with my money for Economy class, but don't know why I don't want to spend on business class, unless it is "free" (though I know technically it's not la haha)
It's all about perspective - If you feel it's okay then it doesn't really matter what other "mile junkies" think!
I'd only do so if economy prices are very high, this would probably mean during peak travel seasons. Or if there are little or no taxes to be paid on an award ticket, and the revenue ticket cost is not cheap either.
Specifically for KF, spontaneous escapes are another good time to redeem economy, some value can be had from this.

The only scenario i can think of that its worth to redeem economy class:-
you have miles that are expiring and you better use it before they are gone
and that is either you have only enough miles to use the economy, (or cash + miles for economy).
Or business class is full, and you can't wait any more because your miles are expiring
I redeemed an economy ticket once, a week before christmas. The revenue price was almost $1k and Business Class was on waitlist. At $1K revenue price, redeeming for economy suddenly became worth it.
Redeeming miles for economy class will make sense if the ticketed prices are high, like holiday seasons or sectors like SIN - PVG for example.
If you want to use less miles, wait for SQ Spontaneous Escapes for a (usually 30%) discount. Take note that tickets for this promo is usually for travel in the next month after (with exception of USA flights which may be 2 months ahead at times).
Hey there, everyone's perception of value may differ so definitely there is no definite answer to this. For one, choosing between 2x return Economy tickets (to Melbourne and Dubai) and 1x return Business class ticket (to Melbourne) is a good gauge of what you value more - quantity of flight experiences or the quality of these experiences. And these are provided you are flying alone.
If you have a company to enjoy these experience with and they are only flying Economy, then it could be worthwhile to fly Economy together with them in order to share the flying experience together.
It depends on your needs.
Personally, if I'm single and travelling alone, it will be a lifestyle to travel in business class or first class.
However, if I'm married and travelling with partner or family, it will be a basic fulfilment to be able to travel via economy or even premium economy.
While the upfront value of miles may not justify the value of an economy ticket, I find more value in travelling with my family without paying for a flight. Hence, it is worth it. =)
