What is the purpose of M9A if an understanding of options and derivatives is not commonly used in insurance?

Looking through the regulatory requirements for the average insurance agent, you'll find that CMFAS M5, M9 and M9A are the primary requirements. I'm told by my friends in the industry that they almost never use information gleaned from M9A. Therefore, what is the purpose of taking M9A for?
