I hope that having a job that I like is not key to having a successful career because I don't like my current job right now.

Hi anon,
As the others have mentioned, what is your definition of a successful career? What do you wish to gain from your career? Money? Impact? Social standing?
One of the key considerations is that you must love what you do. That's easier said than done of course, but if you love what you do, you will never work another day in your life. Naturally there will be days where even in your 'dream' job you will face frustrations, but it will be easier to find an inner reason to continue working in a job you love rather than one that you don't. With a lower risk of getting bored or burning out, you will be able to achieve things that the average person doesn't in your role.
If you don't like your current job right now, how long can you visualise yourself working in your current role? Every day will be a pain, a struggle to drag yourself to work, and your mind will be focused on getting to the end of the day instead of the task at hand. It is hard to imagine a successful career materializing from such a scenario.
