Nope. It surely wasn’t a baseless move. The idea is that most already have these accessories either because they got it from a previous iphone or bought a third party one. Myself even I have left these accessories in the box with my latest iphone. I separately bought a wireless charger. The consumer should be happy they don’t have to pay for these things (they ain’t free) that they won’t use. And for those who wanted it should also be happy because you can be sure Apple didn’t charge a premium to it when factoring it in in the price of the phone. They can get a cheap one elsewhere. I know an influential tech youtuber MKBHD backs the idea too. And honestly its just a plain trivial reason to drop the Apple ecosystem over.

I think Apple is trying to push for wireless charging and to phase out wired earbuds for good amongst its consumers, and this is a relatively smart business move in my opinion. However as a consumer, it can definitely be quite annoying to not have anything else in the box besides the charging cable and still pay such a premium price for the phone.
I dont think it will push consumers who are Apple fans (like myself!) or those who are already so used to Apple's interface to switch to other smartphone brands. Apple is confident of their consumer base and is aware of the premium that they are offering. They know that consumers will still pay the price for it.
