Stanley (Value Invest Asia): If I find a stock, I will typically match it to the index. If it is a Singapore stock I will match it to the STI or in the US S&P 500. Because in my opinion if this stock cannot outperform the index, then there is no need for me to buy that individual stock and I will just buy the index.
Ser Jing (The Good Investors): Similarly, I will also compare the stock to the index. But in my opinion, a stock is a piece of a business - a stock will typically do well over time if the business does well. So how I go about investing in the stock market is thinking about the long term future of the underlying business. If I think that there is a bright future for the underlying business, that is something that I would be interested in.
