Tbh, I will still give allowance to my parents out of gratefulness. Yes, my parents might not need it, but they did indeed spend money to raise me (eg. education, food, shelter).
Although they do not need the money, but I think it is out of courtesy (considering the fact above) that we still give as a form of gratitude. However, if you are working and do not have sufficient money to sustain yourself, then I would suggest giving only on occasions such as Chinese New Year/ Raya/ Deepavali/ Christmas?
If they demand for it and you can't afford it, then you can always sit down and talk to them about your current situation. I am sure they will understand.
