Besides seeking equity diversification to reduce volatility, what other assets-class would be good to invest in for a lay investor seeking to do a monthly investment. Some argue for a Bond component - however, there are many that already treat CPF as serving that function. What do you guys think? If so, what other classes should we be looking at to counteract a portfolio’s risk/volatility especially during a recession.

How about REITS?
If your main concern is volatility, you can look at the REIT+ offered by Syfe.
They are integrating REITS and bonds to reduce the volatility, interesting concept but need time to see whether it works as what they have painted.
