The idea is that you have 2 containers in front of you on your work desk, one empty the other filled with paper clips. Number of paper clips can be number of tasks you plan to clear each day. Every time you clear a task, you move a paper clip to the empty container. This way, you get ‘rewarded’ for clearing your task, and you sort of are able to track how much work you do.

I think it differs from individual. Personally, I like to track daily tasks at work. I use Todoist at the moment and have been kind of personalising it to my own preferences. If we're talking about methodology, I do find a mix of GTD and time blocking works for me. As for tracking hours, I will only do it if it is a new scope of work and roughly track it via the time blocking method.
