Suggestions on local investments(etf/stock etc) besides STI? Read many comments here that STI is not recommended.?

Wanted to finally start my investment journey with ES3 as the "local" portion of my portfolio, but came to see many comments here on why STI is not recommended. Kindly advise.

STI is relatively stable with modest appreciation year-on-year. It definitely has lesser growth potential than most other countries and for that reason, it is comon for investors to seek returns from US/overseas markets. However, investing locally can be safer since you are exposed to lesser risk including foreign exchange risk.

Investing in STI is not the best choice if your risk appetite allows for it, but it is better than leaving in a basic bank account.
