Singapore's population has reached a historic milestone, surpassing 6 million as of June 2024. This growth was primarily driven by an increase in the non-resident population, which grew by 5% from the previous year, contributing significantly to the overall population increase. The citizen population also saw a modest rise, while the Permanent Resident population increased slightly as well.
The rise in non-resident numbers was largely fueled by an influx of work permit holders and migrant domestic workers. Despite this growth, Singapore faces significant demographic challenges, including a low fertility rate (0.97 in 2023) and an aging population. As of June 2024, about one in five Singaporeans was aged 65 and above, with projections indicating that this ratio could reach one in four by 2030. This reflects broader concerns about the nation's aging workforce and shrinking birth rates, similar to trends seen in many other developed nations.
The government's long-term population projections, which anticipate a population between 6.5 to 6.9 million by 2030, align with these trends. However, balancing economic growth, infrastructure demands, and social needs, especially for an aging population, will be critical for Singapore in the coming years

I don't really feel the difference but then I WFH so I cannot imagine for those who commute and eat out every day. As long as citizens are given priority and exclusive benefits to things like BTOs and handouts, I'm still ok I guess.
