Seems like people are voting Trump largely because of his economic policies, but even so, aren't there better candidates than him for the Republican party?

I think in a democracy, the word "better" is different for every single individual. You may prioritize characteristic A over characteristic B, whereas I may have the exact opposite priorities. In Singapore, we are starting to see pretty vocal diverse views. Different people want different things.
