Robo-advisors sound good when starting out with low fees however these can become quite significant once the portfolio managed becomes large (ie >500k). Any suggestions when to switch over?

Switch over to what? If they keep doing a service that you're willing to pay for, why would you stop?

You can only cut down on costs if you're DIY-ing your portfolio management and rebalancing yourself.
