Hi everyone, so I'm currently 27 and have been working full time (9-5 job) for about 4 years now but am thinking of taking a gap year. Reason for this - I feel like I have been drained and work is taking up too much of my time (having to work weekdays evenings and weekends). Hence I would like to take a break to better identify my interests, pursue my hobbies and spend more time with family and friends.
Although I am considering to take up part-time job (e.g. working in a cafe etc.) as well as to finding time to volunteer, am not sure how big of an impact this one year break will be when I want to get back into full time employment after, especially since COVID is still around. Anyone has any thoughts / advice / been through a similar situation before?
Many thanks!
Note: Financially, I have enough savings to last me through a year.

Not too sure on whether there are part-time opening at a cafe in today's climate but can understand where you are coming from. I had a friend who took 6 months break as his health was taking a toil due to excessive stress and bad office environment. He took a long time before he was able to secure a new job. Would advise for short staycations to destress and reconsider this plan of yours.
At the same time, at 27 it shouldnt be an issue securing a job after your break, its a matter of salary and whether the role is something which you are keen to work on. Would support your decision eitherway. Keep the community updated about your decision and your subsequent career path!

Same age as you and took a break after an intense job for very similar reasons. The trigger was largely due to a stroke of a loved one- made me realise that whatever riches I can earn in my job means nothing if I don't even get much time to spend w my loved ones right now. Have seen high flying friends earning big bucks and having no time for family understandably, whose parents passed away suddenly. Told myself I never want to be like them.
At 27, time is our greatest currency, not money. Many thing we want to do now, we can't do later because of reasons like health, more responsibilities - eg explore other fields of interest aside from what we learnt during our schooling years, or explore burgeoning new industries like UXUI, spending time with our loved ones, nurturing our own well-being Etc.
I was fortunate to have had offers waiting a few months for me while I took my break, but I ended up doing a career switch and am now with a known tech company (was formerly in the social service) because during my break I had time to read widely to explore other fields of interests aside from what I had initially thought I was interested/not interested in doing. I participated in social entrepreneurship/innovation hackathons etc as well. I think many are scared of how recruiters would see their gap in employment, but the trick here is to ensure you don't while away your time and at least spend half of it productively on a consistent basis :-) Feel free to reach out if you need more info! It's the biggest risk I've taken this year but the best decision I made as well.

Instead of taking an entire year break, u can take a shorter break say 3 months? Find a new job with lesser demand.
