I watched the drama unfold on CT, but found it too technical to post it here,
From my ELI5, it appears that Ledger would be able to, based on a firmware update (Ledger Recover), to share your private keys with a 3rd party, when it shouldn't be shared with anyone at all.
See caption in this tweet here. https://twitter.com/TheBTCTherapist/status/1660...
"Ledger CEO, Pascal Gauthier, explains that Ledger Recover would give the state the ability to recover your #Bitcoin private keys in the event of a subpoena."
For the current set of audience here on Seedly, I think its rather difficult to explain the ramifications of this feature (bug) to the laymen. the value of BTC and select crypto being permissionless and trustless isn't appreciated by many, if at all on Seedly. I myself wouldn't value it that much either, if I jsut want to profit from owning crypto (I still do). But I have seen enough over the years lurking in the community to understand why the trustlessness is so valued by the crypto folk.
Also fortunate to be owning a Trezor currently, though they are equally likely to implement a feature such as Ledger Recover, as compliance to the USG. There are other solutions out there that are truly trustless, but if people here are really interested in it, they would seek it out themselves.
