Wary of custodian fees/withholding taxes etc that will erode profits. What is the lowest cost method for me to buy into US companies without massive long-term costs and brokerage costs? Is IB the best or is there anything else? My trading volume is too low to justify using IB.

TD Ameritrade is super.
But generally the higher your total invested assets the less important the annual fees today.

Google and Netflix do not pay out dividends. So no issues with withholding taxes on those. There is no escape from paying taxes for the rest of the stocks that pay dividends. At least you don't have capital gain taxes.
TD Ameritrade which I am currently using has no custodian fees and has a fixed commission per trade, good for us with low trade volumes.

Another way is to indirectly own us stocks is to hold an Irish domiciled US ETF or via unit trusts. Those are more tax efficient.
