It's Christmas soon and I want to put aside a bit of money to give back...?

What are some good ways to do so besides just giving money directly to those who need it more?

You could, to list a few:

buy toys/educational materials for kids in orphange
buy drinks for workers labouring under the sun
spend quality time together with folks (FREE)
engage in volunteering activities with community centres or NGOs near your place (FREE)

It depends on what you want really, though often giving your time would be the most effective. Helping the less fortunate with their studies enables them to find a better job in the future and a break from the poverty cycle. If you have doubts about how the money is used in the organisation you're intending to donate to, you can specify how your money can be used (e.g on food only).
