Is credit card better than debit card? Is it easy to get annual fee waived?

My monthly expense is around 800-1000 for income tax, bill, insurance etc. Have been using debit card at 1% cashback pa. Is it more advantageous to use credit card given I track my expense? What are the advantages?

Understand that there is annual fee. Is it possible to get it waived every year?

Fee waiver depends on the bank and usually you can get it waived provided you use it frequently. Some cards like UOB Krisflyer will not allow you to waive even if you call them.

The advantages would be getting yourself free miles and cashback. Having said that, you will only benefit it you pay your bills on time and avoid the hefty interest charges.

Personally, I use a credit card like a debit card (I don't like the idea of owning or waiting till last minute to pay as this is a credit card bill not a loan or investestment). Either I put the sum aside in the bank to pay the bill or i pay immediately after swiping my credit card.

The next question to ask yourself is whether you prefer cashback or miles. The card you apply will differ.

You can also choose to apply 1 or 2 cards depending on the promotion and the type of transansctions.

Yes, credit card is better than debit card, provided you pay your bills on time. Even general spending cards like standard chartered unlimited card gives 1.5% cashback. There are also specific cards like OCBC Frank card, DBS Live fresh that beats your 1% debit card rebate hands down, but with minimum spend requirement. Do note that income tax and insurance spend (usually) do not count towards minimum spend.

Most cards offer annual fee waiver for the first few years. Thereafter, they will automatically waive if your spend is high enough, or you just have to call in to request to waive. In the unlikely event they choose not to waive, then you can just cancel the card.
