In your opinion, what is an afforable luxury gift?

I am attending a birthday party of a very wealthy friend. While he is rich, I am not. I have a budget for a gift that is below $1,500. What is a good gift for this occasion?

Why not a travel experience for your friend? 3D2N trip to Malacca or Bangkok? experiences yield more dividends than luxury gifts 5-10 years down the road :P

Your "very wealthy" friend didn't mention presence precedes present at his birthday party?! The genuine rich will never be after expensive presents at such happy occasions, especially from friends not of equivalent social standing. Perhaps you could get ideas from past gatherings/outings with him, what he likes (to eat/wear e.g. cufflinks) and have it customised for him.
